Bio

Kate Stewart’s creative research encompasses a variety of art practices including painting, drawing, natural dyes, public art, murals, and installation-based projects.

Her work has been featured in Vice Magazine, Philadelphia Magazine, New American Paintings, BmoreArt, Philadelphia City Paper, and Studio Visit Magazine, among others. Her selected solo exhibitions include P.S. 122, Vox Populi, Seraphin Gallery, Moore College of Art, Drexel University, Gettysburg College, and Ejecta Projects. Selected group exhibitions include TATE Modern in London, Plug Projects, Arlington Arts Center, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Towson University, Pageant Soloveev, and the ICA in Philadelphia. Stewart was a featured artist for Mural Fest 2019 in Harrisburg, PA. Other public murals have been commissioned for Arlington (VA), Dickinson College, WCU E.O. Bull Center, and West Chester Friends School. Accolades of distinction include the Meyer Family Award for Contemporary Art, the Fleisher Wind Challenge Award, and several RACA grants from WCU.

Stewart attended artist residencies at Vermont Studio Center, 40th Street A.I.R. in Philadelphia, and was awarded a highly selective artist-in-residence at the Sam and Adele Golden Foundation Exploratory Residency. Stewart’s research interests in natural art materials and gardening were catalysts for bringing a pigment and dye garden to WCU, where she has taught since 2006.
