In-Person Volunteer Opportunities & Safety Measures
While our office strongly encourages students, faculty, and staff to engage in virtual forms of service and volunteering, we recognize that many community-based organizations rely on in-person volunteers to deliver life-sustaining and vital services. Students, faculty, and staff should only volunteer with organizations that have clearly implemented health & safety procedures consistent with state and federal guidelines.
The directory below has been generated to assist members of our campus and broader communities with identifying local organizations seeking in-person volunteers, along with the health and safety measures that those organizations have implemented to mitigate the risk of Covid-19 transmission. Students, faculty, and staff that elect to engage with these organizations do so of their own volition, and should be mindful of the following guidelines:
- Make sure that the organization has implemented health and safety procedures designed to minimize exposure to Covid-19 (e.g., social distancing measures and frequent cleanings/sanitizing).
- Find out (through a telephone conversation or online posting) about any risks that may be associated with a volunteer activity and do not take part if you feel uncomfortable with risk level.
- Do not show up to volunteer for any activity without first confirming that the organization needs and expects your engagement.
- Do not attempt to engage in in-person volunteering if you have been exposed to Covid-19 or are experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, or shortness of breath.
- Adhere to all rules, safety protocols, and guidelines set forth by the organization to minimize exposure to Covid-19.
- When not volunteering, adhere to state and federal guidelines for mitigating risk of Covid-19 exposure. Before volunteering, notify the organization if you have recently attended parties or large indoor events/gatherings.
- Bring your mask and wear it at all times when serving on site.
- Maintain social distancing (at least 6 feet of distance between others) while volunteering.
- Wash your hands or use alcohol-based hand rub throughout your time volunteering.
- Avoid touching your face while volunteering.
- Do not shake hands with, touch or hug individuals while volunteering.
- If you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth with your elbow or use a tissue and dispose of immediately, and wash hands.
In-Person Volunteer Opportunities:
SCCON Learning Pod Volunteers
The Southern Chester County Opportunity Network is setting up 3 learning pods to serve under-resourced K-5th grade students who need support to stay engaged with virtual schooling. These learning pods would be providing a safe and consistent place for students to go and receive adult supervision and support as they engage with their online classrooms during the school day. The coalition needs volunteers to help staff these sites during school hours while students are engaged in their virtual classrooms. Volunteers are needed weekdays from 8am-12pm, 12pm-4pm, or full days as needed. Volunteers will need to provide child abuse clearances.
The 3 Learning Pod sites are located in Kennett Square, Avon Grove, and Oxford.
Interested volunteers can reach out to Kate Daneker (kdaneker@ksqroots.com) or express interest in volunteering using this Google Form.
