Sports Media Production Certificate

The Certificate in Sports Media Production will provide undergraduate students an opportunity to directly build their skills for careers opportunities in the sports media and sports broadcasting industry including both on-air and behind the scenes opportunities. This 12-credit certificate is designed for those who want to enhance their sports media broadcast production skills as a part of, or in addition to, their regular undergraduate course curriculum. Students from all majors and programs are welcome to earn the Sports Media Production Certificate. 

In this certificate you will:

  • Learn the key roles in the production process
  • Develop skills to write, edit, and produce sports media content
  • Understand guiding ethical principles while developing a keen critical eye for assessing and evaluating content

Certificate Requirements

Required Courses 

(take both of these – 6 credits):

  • MDC 211: Introduction to Sports Media Production - This course offers instruction, analysis, and training in sports media production with a particular focus on producing video for broadcast and web. Specific topics will include information gathering and research, interviewing, sports commentary, live sporting events, and preparing video packages.
  • MDC 411: Advanced Sports Media Production - This course offers instruction, analysis, and training in advanced sport broadcasting. Students will learn the different production roles for a live sports show, develop a critical eye for improving their own production skills, and create content for their portfolio.

Elective Courses

  • MDC 217: Introduction to Video Production
  • MDC 311: Communication Professions in Sports
  • MDC 317: Advanced Video Production
  • MDC 320: Communication on Television and Radio
  • MDC 375: Communication Through Risk & Crisis
  • JRN 312: Sports Reporting and Writing 


Adding the Certificate

The certificate officially launches in Fall, 2025. You will be able to add the certificate through RamPortal at that time. MDC 211 is being offered in Fall 2025 so be sure to sign up to get started on the certificate! Please note that any courses you have taken already (e.g., if you took MDC 311 in Spring 25) will count toward the certificate.
