Proctorio Resources for Faculty

Proctorio is an online proctoring service that integrates with D2L. This tool is fully automated and leverages AI technology to monitor test-takers and flag suspicious behaviors.

  • D2L Integration: Proctorio works directly within D2L’s Quizzes tool.
  • Customizable Security: Instructors can tailor the level of monitoring and browser lockdown to fit the specific needs of an exam.
  • Recording: Proctorio supports webcam, audio, screen, and/or web traffic recording during exams.
  • Lock Down Options: Instructors can enable customizable browser-locking features that are designed to prevent students from accessing unauthorized materials, communicating with others, or capturing exam content.
  • Monitoring: Proctorio uses AI algorithms to flag suspicious behaviors, such as looking away from the screen for an extended period, the presence of another person in the room, or unusual sounds.

Technology Requirements

To run Proctorio, instructors and test-takers must use a laptop or desktop computer that has:

  • A stable internet connection.
  • A compatible web browser (Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, or Brave).
  • The Proctorio Browser Extension installed.

For exams that have the webcam and/or audio recording settings enabled, test-takers will also need a webcam and/or microphone.

Adding Proctorio to Your D2L Course

Step 1: Decide if Online Proctoring is the Best Solution for Your Course

CONSIDER WHETHER ONLINE PROCTORING SUPPORTS YOUR INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS

While online proctoring services might serve as a deterrent to academic dishonesty, it is important to consider whether this solution truly aligns with your instructional goals. The TLC has developed two blog posts which overview the potential drawbacks of, as well as alternatives to, online proctoring:

DETERMINE WHETHER YOUR COURSE IS ELIGIBLE FOR ONLINE PROCTORING

There is a limit to the number of online proctored exams that the university is able to accommodate. Because of this, only courses that administer high-stakes assessments, in which the exam is worth at least 15% of the final grade, will be granted access to Proctorio. New faculty users also must complete a 30-minute consultation with Jessica Drass (more information in Step 2).

Step 2: Update Your Syllabus and Schedule a Proctorio Consultation

ADD A PROCTORIO STATEMENT TO YOUR SYLLABUS

In effort to manage expectations and allow students adequate time to obtain or prepare any required technology, it is important to communicate your intention to use Proctorio in your course at the beginning of the semester. Therefore, we ask that you include a Proctorio Statement in your syllabus. The TLC has drafted a sample syllabus statement that you may use.

SCHEDULE A PROCTORIO CONSULTATION (new users only)

If it is your first time using Proctorio at WCU, you will need to complete a 30-minute Technology Consultation with Jessica Drass (select the Other Technology Consultation service option when scheduling via Bookings).

Step 3: Submit a Proctorio Request in ServiceNow

Each semester, you will need to submit a Proctorio Request in ServiceNow for each D2L course that you would like connected to Proctorio

  • Proctorio Requests should be submitted at least two (2) weeks prior to the desired exam date.
  • Proctorio Requests will only be approved if:
    • The course administers a high-stakes assessment, in which the exam is worth at least 15% of the final grade
    • The instructor has completed a Proctorio Consultation with the TLC before using it for the first time.

Step 4: Confirmation and Final Setup

Once your Proctorio Request has been approved and fulfilled, you will receive an email confirmation from a member of the TLC that includes resources and step-by-step instructions for finalizing setup in your course.
