Sabbatical Leave

Sabbatical - Memo from the SaLe

The Sabbatical Leave Committee invites all tenured faculty members to apply for next year's round of sabbatical leaves. The deadline is 4 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.

Please note that applying for sabbatical is a highly competitive process. The University has base funding set aside each year for 23 sabbaticals. While the Provost's office does try to award a few additional sabbaticals as funding allows, demand far exceeds availability. In 2025, the Sabbatical Leave Committee received 39 applications.

All documents related to sabbaticals may be found below under Resources. There you will be able to access the sabbatical policy, link to the online application form, budget form, and examples of successful applications from past years.

Review of proposals occurs only during the fall semester. A proposal submitted in Fall 2026 can apply for a sabbatical in Fall 2027 or Spring 2028. Because sabbatical applications must be submitted at least two semesters in advance, faculty members cannot apply in the fall semester for a sabbatical to be taken in the spring semester immediately following submission of the application.

Electronic Submission Process

All required sabbatical application materials, supporting materials, and Department Chair and Dean recommendations are submitted to the online submission system. The application must be submitted by the deadline date of September 15th at 4:00 PM EST. After the application has been submitted, it will be made available through the online system to the appropriate Department Chairperson and Dean/appropriate manager for their review and recommendation. No late applications will be accepted. No additional materials can be added to the application after the stated deadline.

Scoring

Sabbatical leave applications are reviewed using the following rating scale:

  • Up to 70 points for the quality of the project
  • Up to 20 points for meritorious service
  • Up to 10 points for years of service

The Sale Committee scoring guide can be found below under Resources.

By December 15th, the President or his/her designee notifies the faculty of sabbatical leaves granted.
