The Experiential Learning in Ghana: Public Health Social Work study abroad program is designed to enable students of all majors to travel to Ghana for eight (8) days while earning three (3) credits towards their degree. Students traveling to Ghana will enroll in the SWO 493: Public Health Social Work elective, a five-week, 100% online asynchronous course, offered in the summer and winter terms. Students traveling to Ghana will complete the first 3.5 weeks of the SWO 493 elective online and use the experiential learning trip to Ghana to complete the remainder of the course. The experiential learning activities include trips to social work and public health agencies such as the Osu Children’s Home (Orphanage) and the Accra Regional Hospital to interact with children, social workers, public health practitioners, etc. The program also includes a visit to the University of Ghana (UG) where WCU students engage in educational and cross-cultural interactions and activities with UG students and faculty. Other program highlights include cultural immersion activities and excursions to major historical landmarks such as the Elmina Castle, the Assin Manso Slave River & Market, the Kakum National Park, the Independence Square, and the Accra Art Center, and more.

  • Approved elective for Social Work and ALL other majors
  • Approved elective for the Certificate in Global Health Program
  • Satisfies HEA elective for Public Health majors
  • Approved elective for Master of Social Work students
  • Graduate students in other programs must get approval from their department chairperson
