Applied Statistics

• To build familiarity with design and statistical analysis issues that arise in practice.
• To build familiarity with terms from sampling, experimental designs, and clinical trials.
• To build confidence in review and discussion of journal articles on various topics of statistical analyses that arise in practice.
• To build confidence and experience in collaborative projects.

Students will learn and discuss both the practical and theoretical issues regarding sampling design.  Sampling topics will include stratified, systematic, and cluster sampling, as well as resampling, population size estimation, and ratio estimators.  The class will conclude with a treatment of experimental design issues ranging from blocking to response surface analysis.  Emphasis will be placed on statistical literacy, through journal articles, as well as computational approaches to sampling design.

Your grade will be based on the following:

Technology

Students will be using SAS 9.  Students should be comfortable in using SAS prior to taking this course.  The following skills are expected:

Reading and creating SAS data sets

Familiarity with basic stat procedures such as PROC REG and PROC GLM

Able to save output files, SAS code, and SAS logs

Comfortable in the SAS LAB.
