Pathways to Teaching Excellence
Program Overview
Whether you are a seasoned instructor or new to teaching, it is important to take time to reflect on your teaching practice, and the assumptions that shape it so that you can adapt your strategies to meet the changing needs of students and the evolving contexts in which you teach. With the many demands on your time, it can be difficult to find time to reflect and explore new strategies that you could use to increase student engagement and support the learning needs of all your students.
We are pleased to offer a new initiative, the Pathways to Teaching Excellence program, that is designed to fit into even the busiest of schedules. This self-paced, flexible program, hosted by the Teaching and Learning Center in partnership with OneHE, is an opportunity for faculty to learn about evidence-based teaching approaches to support student engagement in inclusive learning environments. We invite you to join us for this online self-paced challenge that will run from February 19th to May 6th.
Program Details
Participants in the program can choose to complete one or more of the following challenges:
- Teaching foundations: Fundamentals of effective teaching, including topics such as helping students learn how to learn, course development, active learning, teaching by discussion, and enhancing academic integrity.
- Equity-minded Teaching: Strategies for creating inclusive learning environments that support all students. Topics include culturally responsive pedagogy, developing students’ growth mindsets, and designing learning experiences for access, inclusion, and equity.
- Engaging Students in Learning: Techniques to actively engage students and inspire meaningful learning. Topics covered include learning through practicing, learning through connecting, and active learning.
- Choose your own adventure: Participants can customize their learning path by selecting up to 10 micro-courses that meet their needs and interests.
To complete the challenge, participants will do the following:
- Review 6 - 10 micro-courses in each challenge. Each micro-course is about 20 minutes long and provides an overview of a teaching strategy and practical examples of applying it.
- Reflect on your own practice based on content from the micro-courses. Engage in dialogue with peers at WCU and/or faculty from other institutions partnering with OneHE.
Estimated Time Commitment: 1-2 hours, weekly
