Mission Moment: Celebrating Black History Month 2025: African Americans and Labor

The College of Health Sciences proudly honors Dr. Tammy James and Dr. Margaret Ottley, whose leadership and dedication have significantly impacted the academic departments they service, College of Health Sciences, WCU and beyond.

Tammy James, PhD, Professor, Public Health Sciences:  Dr. James has been instrumental in student success initiatives, most recently leading the COMPASS Program, which supports underrepresented students. Her efforts contributed to WCU earning its fifth consecutive HEED Award for diversity excellence, and she was nominated for the Division II Faculty Mentor Award.

Margaret Ottley, PhD, Professor, Kinesiology:  A leader in sports and performance psychology, Dr. Ottley integrates African epistemology into her work. She directs the "Dream Big" program, consults for Nike, and has worked with USA Track and Field. A global speaker and Fellow of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology, she continues to elevate Black excellence in sport and psychology.
